What Is a Blue Moon

The modern calendar-month rule versus the older seasonal rule, both explained honestly.

Two different rules both go by "Blue Moon," and this guide's job is to lay out exactly how each one is calculated, since that's the part most explainers gloss over. Rule one, the one this site's own full-moon pages actually flag: count full moons inside a single calendar month; if a second one fits, it's a Blue Moon. Rule two, older and less commonly used today: count full moons inside one astronomical season (equinox to solstice or solstice to equinox); if a season that normally holds three ends up holding four, the third one in that run of four is the Blue Moon.

The arithmetic behind rule one is worth walking through with real numbers rather than taking on faith. A synodic month — one full lunar cycle — averages 29.53 days. Every calendar month has at least 28 days, and most have 30 or 31, so ordinarily exactly one full moon fits per month. But when a full moon lands on the 1st or 2nd of a 31-day month, the arithmetic leaves just enough runway (31 minus 29.53 is under two days of slack, occasionally enough) for a second full moon to squeeze in before that month's last day — and that second one is what this site's isBlueMoon flag catches.

Rule two's mechanics work on a longer clock: an astronomical season runs roughly three months, long enough for three full moons in almost every case, occasionally four when the timing lines up. Whichever of the four in that season falls third gets the name — a completely different counting method from rule one, which is why the two rules don't always flag the same month as "blue."

Track where rule one actually came from and the mechanics start to make more sense: a 1946 Sky & Telescope piece restated a 1937 almanac's seasonal rule inaccurately, and the simplified, easier-to-explain "second in a month" version is the one that stuck through decades of reuse, while the original three-month version quietly became the minority reading. Worked example: if a 31-day month's first full moon lands at, say, 2:00 AM on the 1st, the next full moon — roughly 29.53 days later — falls close to the 30th or 31st, comfortably inside the same calendar month, and both months' full moons get flagged. Shift that first full moon just a few hours later, past midnight into the 2nd, and the second one often slides into the following month instead, producing zero Blue Moons that stretch rather than one.

February is the one calendar month that structurally can never produce a calendar-month Blue Moon on its own, since even in a leap year it tops out at 29 days — one day short of a full synodic month, leaving no possible arithmetic path for two full moons to land inside it.

A month that skips a full moon entirely (possible only in February, and only when the surrounding months' full moons fall awkwardly close to its boundaries) is sometimes informally called a "Black Moon" by analogy — not a formal astronomical term, but a natural extension of the same monthly-count logic in reverse.
