How to Photograph the Moon
Camera settings and timing that actually make a difference for lunar shots.
The single biggest mistake in Moon photography is treating it like a night-sky/low-light subject when it's actually a bright, sunlit object — the Moon is illuminated by direct sunlight, and photographing it well means exposing for a bright subject, not a dark one. A useful starting point borrowed from daytime photography is the "Looney 11" rule: set your aperture to f/11, your shutter speed to roughly the inverse of your ISO (e.g., 1/100s at ISO 100), and adjust from there based on your camera's histogram — treating the Moon essentially like a subject in full daylight, because from the Moon's own perspective, it is.
Focal length matters more for the Moon than almost any other common photography subject, because it's genuinely small in the sky (about 0.5 degrees across) despite looking large to the naked eye near the horizon (see our Moon-illusion guide for why). A basic phone camera or a 50mm lens will render the Moon as a tiny, mostly featureless dot; meaningful detail (craters, maria, terminator shadows) generally needs at least 300-400mm of focal length, and serious lunar photographers often shoot at 600mm or more, or use a telescope with a camera adapter.
Phase matters as much as gear: a Full Moon, despite being the brightest and most obvious target, is actually one of the worst phases for detail shots, since flat, straight-on sunlight washes out crater shadows and surface relief. First Quarter or Last Quarter — with the terminator (the line between lit and unlit surface) running down the middle of the disc — show dramatically more texture, since low-angle sunlight there casts long shadows across craters and mountain ranges.
A sturdy tripod is close to non-negotiable at long focal lengths, since even small hand-shake is heavily magnified; a remote shutter release or a 2-second timer helps avoid shake from pressing the shutter button itself. Manual focus, checked carefully using your camera's zoomed-in live view on a sharp lunar feature, will almost always outperform autofocus at night on a subject this small and high-contrast.
For landscape-style shots that include the Moon looking dramatically large against a foreground (buildings, mountains, a horizon), that large-looking Moon is only achievable through the same optical illusion combined with a genuinely long lens compressing the perspective — capturing that shot requires planning your location and timing carefully around moonrise, using an app or this site's calendar to know the exact rise time and direction in advance, then standing far enough from your foreground subject that a long lens compresses the distance between it and the rising Moon.
Stacking multiple exposures — taking several shots of the same Moon and combining them in software to reduce noise and sharpen detail — is a technique borrowed from planetary astrophotography that works well for lunar images too, especially useful with smaller telescopes or lenses where a single frame's atmospheric turbulence might otherwise limit sharpness.
